BOABC’s New Online Learning I’ve been working with the Building Officials’ Association of BC for a couple of years to build online learning. We’re down to crunch time and getting very close to launching their new level one eLearning. We used Articulate Storyline 360 to build the modules. Then we publish them to BOABC’s custom Moodle site. I’ve called them “online study guides”. They to help learners become intimately familiar with the BC Building Code. The ultimate goal is to help members prepare for exams. This video is a sneak peek of the new template and the first module of the level one series. The video, built in Camtasia 2019, is just another type of media we work with at Hemeon Learning. Engaging eLearning module for BOABC

Challenge The BOABC needs an engaging eLearning module. It needs to give learners an overview of some of the changes to the BC Building Code. Solution We created a magazine-style module in Articulate Storyline 360. The module uses a table of contents so learners can navigate the “articles”. Some articles are a single spread. Other articles use the built-in navigation to move between pages. We chose real images and kept the text simple. Driving for a Healthier Planet

Challenge This learning “bite” complements a larger initiative on driving awareness. This is the third in a series that focuses on behaviour changes employees can make to reduce vehicle emissions. Solution The final module includes four videos with an eLearning “wrapper” to package them together. The eLearning “wrapper” allows the learning management system to track completion. Working with the client’s internal design team and subject matter experts, we brought the pieces together. Afterwards we assisted with the video scripts, shot lists and developed the eLearning course. Hemeon Learning also designed the eLearning module’s look and feel. The look and feel goes with the video style which looks like old, silent movies. We used a border around the text slides to draw attention to the short text blurbs. The title slide image has a sepia tone to complete the look. We designed simple, custom buttons and a straight-forward menu. As a result, learners can easily navigate the short course. A professional videographer shot the videos. The client’s in-house editing team edited them before passing them on to us to incorporate them into the eLearning course. BOABC Online Learning Program

We used instructional design techniques to convert modular training from instructor-led materials into a full online program. Challenge The Building Officials’ Association of BC needs to offer their level one training program to a larger audience. The audience is across the province of BC. This makes in-person training challenging. Solution We started with the instructional design for one module, or lesson. We took the existing trainer guide and wrote an eLearning outline. The outline includes a description, topics, learning objectives, and the lesson quiz questions. After the client approved the outline, we turned it into an eLearning course. We designed a template and style based on the client’s preferences. Once the client approved the initial lesson, we repeated the process for all 13 of the lessons in level one. The online program will incorporate the lessons when they are all reviewed and approved. The lack of images and learning activities in the existing content proved challenging. We solved image challenges by adding relevant stock photos and repurposing diagrams. Diagrams with markers, tabbed interactions, and review questions provide activities throughout the lessons. Prompts in the course encourage learners to read sections of the building code. Each lesson also has a printable workbook. It gives learners even more practice with relevant concepts. Technical Safety BC Personal Gas Monitors Course

This course is an overview of a personal gas monitor that Technical Safety BC employees use when they enter confined spaces. Challenge Technical Safety BC employees attend in-person confined space training. The external vendor’s training doesn’t include instruction on how to use the personal gas monitor. Employees need this instruction before they can perform confined space entries. Solution Employees now take an online learning module after the confined space training. The content is from the technical documentation for the specific instrument model. The client took detailed photos for each step based on a shot list we provided. We organized the technical documentation into simple step-by-step procedures. Learners follow along with step-by-step instructions by practicing with their personal gas monitor. The short quiz at the end tests learners’ ability to recall the steps. Finally, the included job aid is a take away reference for learners to use on the job. The layers and triggers in Articulate Storyline allowed us to build interactive step-by-step procedures. Also, on-screen buttons give visual cues to learners about how to proceed through the course’s activities. We created a fresh design for the course.
